The European Union 'Erasmus' student exchange program was founded in 1987 and has been expanding ever since, incorporating an increasing amount of countries and more levels of study. In 2007, the Erasmus program was incorporated into the European Union's ''Lifelong Learning Program 2007-2013''. Since its creation, close to 3 million students have taken part in these exchanges. The program is named after the Dutch philosopher Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam who lived and worked in many places in Europe to expand his knowledge and gain new insights.
