Before starting her political career with the PvdA, Eijsink held several positions in the Dutch education system. She has been working consecutively as a nursery school teacher, nursery head teacher and music teacher and deputy head teacher of a primary school between 1979 and 1985. She coordinated an education and development project for disabled children in the Philippines between 1985 and 1987, after which she returned to the Netherlands to work as a music teacher at three different secondary schools. She began working as a civil servant in 1995, when she became a policy officer with the 'Children and Development programme' of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
