Petra De Sutter was born as Peter de Sutter in Oudenaarde on the 10th of June 1963. She is a professor of gynaecology at Ghent University, head of the Department of Reproductive Medicine at Ghent University Hospital (UZ Gent). She is also a politician of the Green party and a member of the senate since 2014.

Political career

In the 2014 European elections she was second on the list of the Flemish Green party. Although the party won votes, it only got enough votes for one representative. Petra was subsequently co-opted by her party for a seat in the Belgian Senate. She is one of the few openly transgender politicians in Europe.

Education

De Sutter obtained her degree in Medicine 1987 from the Rijks universiteit Gent. In 1991 she be-came a doctor in biomedical sciences. After that she went to Chicago for two years to conduct re-search on human and mouse genetics. In 1994 she became a recognised gynaecologist. In the same year she also obtained an aggregate for higher education.
