Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, known better as Shakira, is a Colombian singer-songwriter, dancer, choreographer, model and record producer, born 2 February 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia. Shakira was raised in her home town where she began performing in school, showing great abilities and passion for Latin, Arabic and rock and roll in addition to belly dancing. Shakira began writing songs when she was barely eight years old and learned to speak English by studying the work of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Walt Whitman.
