He is also a member of Club de Madrid and the Africa Forum. He sits on the advisory board for the Global Peace & Unity Foundation and is a board member for the “International Institute and International Committee of the 17th October” – the International Day for the Elimination of Poverty.

Uteem joined the leftist political party, Military Movement of Mauritius (MMM), rising to deputy leader during the 1970’s. In 1969, he was elected Councilor of the City of Port Louis. From 1982 to 193, he was appointed Minister of Employment, Social Security, and National Solidarity. From 1983 to 1987, he occupied the post of Opposition Whip. In 1986, he was elected Lord Mayor of Port Louis and in 1998 was elected Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee until 1990. President Uteem was the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry & Industrial Technology from 1990 to 1992 before becoming President of Mauritius from 1992 to 2002. He is a board member of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) in Sweden, a member of the Haut Conseil de la Francophonie, and is the International jury for the UNESCO Prize of Education for Peace.
