Lord Donoughue was a member of the editorial staff of the Economist between 1959 and 1960. He then became Reader in Politics at the London School of Economics between 1963 and 1974. In 1974 he became head of the Number 10 Policy Unit as Senior Advisor to Prime Minister Harold Wilson. He continued in this post until 1979. In 1982 he was Assistant Editor to the Times.
