August Wöginger has been politically active since he was 16. From 1997 to 2002, he was a Councilor for the municipality Esternberg. In addition, he has been active since 2003 in the municipal council of Sigharting. He has also been Vice Mayor there since 2008. Since 2009, he has been a Member of the state party executive of the ÖVP. Wöginger is the  Vice Chairman of the ÖVP parliamentary group since 2013. He is the Social Speaker of the ÖVP Group.
