Andrzej Dera worked in the Committee of Citizens 'Solidarity' between 1990 and 1991. Between 1991-1993 he belonged to the Center Alliance, from 1996 until 1999 he was a member of the Christian-National Union, and between in 1999-2001 the AWS Social Movement. From 2001 until 2011 he worked in Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (Law and Justice), and in 2012 he sat on the board of the newly formed party Solidarity Poland (he was also the Secretary General).

From 10 July 2007 to 4 November 2007 he was a member of the Public Service of the Prime Minister. In the sixth term of the Sejm became a member of the Commission of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances of the kidnapping and murder of Krzysztof Olewnik. In the elections to the Parliament in 2011 successfully ran for re-election.. In the Sejm seventh term proceeded to parliamentary caucus Solidary Poland (after its collapse in 2014 sat in a circle SP). He was a candidate for the European Parliament in 2014. In July 2014 he sat in the club Deputies Sprawiedliwa Polska (Fair Poland).
