Steven Vanackere

Steven Vanackere was born on the 4th February 1964 in Wevelgem. He is a Flemish politician and member of the Christian Democratic and Flemish party (CD&V). In 2014 he became co-opted sen-ator for CD & V.

Political career[edit]

Steven Vanackere has worked since 1988 for CEPESS , the research department of the then CVP -PSC , where he was political adviser of CVP-President Herman Van Rompuy. In 1991 he became Deputy Head of Cabinet of the Brussels Minister Jos Chabert, and he was his private secretary until 1999. In 2004 he was elected to the Flemish Parliament for the electoral district of Brussels. The term ran until 2009 but he was replaced in 2007 because he became Flemish Minister of Health, Welfare and Family. In June 2009 he was elected to the Brussels Parliament, but left because he became minister again, this time Minister of Foreign Affairs and Institutional Reforms in the gov-ernment Leterme II. He was also Leterme’s Federal Deputy Prime Minister till 2011. From the 6th of December 2011 till March 2013 he was again Federal Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Fi-nance and Sustainable Development in the government Di Rupo. He was awarded the third place in the 2014 European elections, but he was not elected. On July 1st 2014 it was announced that Vanackere would become a co-opted senator for CD & V.

Notable works[edit]

In 2005 he and Cathy Berx, both Flemish MEPs at the time, wrote on the book “Vergrijzing en verkleuring” of the then Flemish Prime Minister Leterme (editing by Mark Van de Voorde ), issued in 2005 by Davidsfonds. His contribution was the part about “vergrijzing” (aging).

Education[edit]

Steven Vanackere has a Bachelor's degree in Political Sciences. He obtained both his Master in Law (1987) and Economic Sciences (1888) from the Catholic University of Leuven (KULeuven).In the academic year of1986-1987 he was president of the faculty circle of law the students, the Flemish Law Society.
