Said W. Musa
Said W. Musa was born in San Ignacio, Cayo District, Belize on March 19,1944. He is a lawyer and politician, who served as Prime Minister of Belize from 1998 to 2003, and was re-elected for a second term from 2003 to 2008. Musa is the first Prime Minster to be re-elected after Belize achieved Independence in 1981.
Political Career[edit]
Said W. Musa joined the People’s United Party (PUP) during the 1960’s. He entered private practice, but before doing that, he served as the Circuit Magistrate and later on, the Crown Counsel in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in 1970. He was appointed Senator from 1974 to 1979. He was then elected as a member of the House of Representatives for the Fort George Division. He also served as Attorney General and Minister of Economic Development from 1979 to 1984. In 1980, Musa was appointed to Senior Counsel for the Attorney-at-Law in Belize. A year later, he assisted in drafting the Belize Independence Constitution. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Education, and Sports from 1989 to 1993. In 1996, he was elected as the leader of the People’s United Party (PUP). From 1998 to 2003, his party won the election and he began his appointment as the Prime Minster of Belize. He was re-elected as Prime Minister in 2003 and served till 2008. He stepped down as the leader of the People’s United Party, and then returned to private practice with the firm he founded with the late Lawrence Balderamos in 2008.
Education[edit]
Said W. Musa received an Honours Degree in Law from Manchester University in England in 1966. He then was admitted to the Honorable Member of Grays a year later. In 1970, he enrolled as an Attorney-at-law in Belize.
