Philippe Mahoux

Philippe Mahoux was born in Ciney on the 26th of June 1944. He is a Belgian politician, and a member of the Parti Socialiste (PS).

Political career[edit]

Philippe Mahoux became senator in 1990. He was a minister of the Government of the French Community from 1994 till 1995. From 1994 till 1996 he was Minister of Education and Broadcast-ing. After that he returned to the Senate, first as vice-president and then as head of the Socialist Group. During the 1995-1999 term, he is Vice -Chairman and Rapporteur of the Committee appointed to look into the murder of ten Belgian paratroopers and the Rwandan genocide. The process led to a report in 1997. During the 1999-2003 term he contributed to laws decriminalising euthanasia, banning genetic test-ing in hiring, permitting homosexual marriage and an anti -discrimination law on embryo research. He was mayor of Gesves from 2001 till 2006. Currently he is president of the PS in the Senate.

Notable works[edit]

In 1979 he completed his first humanitarian mission in Beirut with the Red Crescent Movement. Throughout the summers he regularly conducted missions Abroad via the Red Crescent, MSF, Oxfam and Solidarité socialiste.

Education[edit]

Mahoux went to school at the Athénée royal de Namur. After that he studied medicine at the Uni-versité catholique de Louvain (he pre-1968 university). He completed his studies in Paris where he worked as “assistant étranger des hôpitaux de Paris” for two years. He worked as a surgeon at the Regional Hospital of Namur and later became chief of abdominal surgery.
