Lord Howard of Lympne

Lord Howard of Lympne was born on the 4th July 1941. He is a British politician who served as the Leader of the Conservative Party and Leader of the Opposition from November 2003 to De-cember 2005 and held multiple cabinet positions before that. He became a member of the House of Lords on 20 July 2010.

Political career[edit]

Lord Howard of Lympne became a Member of Parliament in the 1983 general election. He joined the Government as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Trade and Indus-try in 1985. In 1987 he became Minister for Local Government, after that he was Minister for Water and Planning (1988). He joined the Cabinet first as Secretary of State for Employment, then Secre-tary of State for the Environment. in 1993 he became Home Secretary. Howard was the Leader of the Conservative Party and Leader of the Opposition from November 2003 to December 2005. Howard served as Shadow Home Secretary, Shadow Foreign Secretary, Shadow Chancellor, and Leader of the Opposition. He led the Conservative Party at the 2005 general election.

Notable works[edit]

He was appointed to the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2011.

Education[edit]

Howard earned a place at Peterhouse at Cambridge University because of his A-levels. After first studying economics, he graduated in law in 1962.
