Robert Gavron, Baron Gavron, (born 13 September 1930) is a British printing millionaire, philanthropist and a Labour Life Peer.

Political Career[edit]

Lord Gavron joined the House of Lords on the 6th August 1999. In the House of Lords he has been a mem-ber of the Works of Art Committee between 1999 and 2003 and then again between 2005 and 2009.

Education[edit]

He studied at Leighton Park School in Reading and St Peter's College, Oxford and became a barrister, called to the bar by Middle Temple in 1955.

Notable Work[edit]

Lord Gavron founded St Ives plc in 1964, a company that he was then chairman of until 1993. Between 1975 and 1987 he was Director of Octopus Publishing, and subsequently director of Electra Management between 1981 and 1992. Since 1982 he has been Chairman of the Folio Society and since 1983 the Proprietor of the Carcanet Press. He has held a number of roles in public organisations which include a trustee for the Institute for Public policy research between 1991 and 2009, a Chairman of the Open College of Arts between 1991 and 1996, Director of the Royal opera House between 1992 and 1998, a Trustee of the National Gallery between 1994 and 2001 and Governor of the London School of Economics between 1997 and 2002.
