Lord Carswell
Robert Douglas Carswell was born on the 28th June 1934.
Political Career[edit]
Lord Carswell was appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary as Baron Carswell, of Killeen in the County of Down on 12th January 2004. On 20th November, 2007 Lord Carswell gave a lecture entitled ‘The Breastplate of Judgement: Human Rights in the House of Lords’ at the University of Cambridge.
Education[edit]
Carswell was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. He then went on to study at Pembroke College, Oxford where he received a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Arts in classics and law. After this, Carswell went on to graduate from the University of Chicago’s Law School with a Doctor of Jurisprudence.
Notable Work[edit]
Lord Carswell has held a number of significant roles in his career. He was Counsel to the Attorney General for Northern Ireland from 1970 to 1971 and the Senior Crown Counsel in Northern Ireland from 1979 to 1984. In 1984 he was made a judge of the High Court of Justice Northern Ireland. Then in 1993 he went on to become Lord Justice of Appeal at the Supreme Court of Judicature in Northern Ireland, a position he held until 1997. In 1997 he was made Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland from 1997 to 2004. He was knighted in 1988.
