Harald Walser, born on April 18, 1953 in Hohenems (Vorarlberg), is an Austrian politician, school director and a Member of Parliament for the Greens (Die Grünen) since 2008. He was the top candidate of the Greens Vorarlberg in the national elections of 2008 and 2013.

Political career[edit]

In 2000, Walser began his commitment to the Vorarlberg Greens as a board member of the Green Education Workshop. Since spring 2008, he has been a member of the national executive of the Greens. Politically, he is particularly involved with educational and social policy issues. On August 6, 2008, the national assembly of the Vorarlberg Greens elected him as the top candidate for the general election campaign in 2008 in Vorarlberg. Walser has been member of the Austrian National Council and the Education spokesman for the Greens Since the general election on September 28, 2008.

Education[edit]

Harald Walser studied German and history at the University of Innsbruck. He was the co-founder of the Vorarlberg teachers initiative in 1979. He received his Ph.D. in history in 1982 with the thesis "The illegal NSDAP in Tyrol and Vorarlberg 1933-1938". In 1978, Walser began teaching at the high school of Feldkirch, where he also served as director from 2003 to 2008.

Notable work[edit]

As a historian, he is co-founder and board member of the Johann-August-Malin Society. He has written about the history of Vorarlberg and Tyrol in the first half of the 20th century for a number of publications. Between 2001 and 2008, Harald Walser wrote a weekly column in the Vorarlberg messages. Walser was employed in various capacities between 1991 and 2006, most recently as chairman of the Vorarlberg Rhine village football club SC Altach. During his tenure, they were promoted to the second highest Austrian league. During his own active career as a football player, Walser played for SC Rheindorf Altach and VfB Hohenems.
