Geert Bourgeois was born on 6 July 1951 in Roeselare (Belgium). He has been the Minister-President of Flanders and Flemish Minister of Foreign Policy and Immovable Heritage since 2014. He is a member of the Flemish nationalist party (N-VA).

Political Career[edit]

Bourgeois started his political career in 1977 when he was elected councillor of Izegem. From 1983 to 1994 he was alderman of the city for Volksunie (Predecessor of N-VA). In 1995 he won a seat in the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, he was re-elected in 1999, and 2004, and stayed there until July 2004 when he got elected into the Flemish Parliament. Between 2004 and 2014, Bourgeois was Minister in the Flemish Governments Peeters 1 & 2; first as Flemish Minister of Administrative Affairs, Foreign Policy, Media and Tourism, and then in the second term as Vice-Minister President and Flemish Minister of Administrative Affairs, Local and Provincial Government, Civic Integration, Tourism, and ‘De Vlaamse Rand’. Since the regional elections in May 25th 2014, he has been Flemish Minister President of Flanders and Flemish Minister of Foreign Policy and Immovable Heritage. Piet De Bruyn replaced him as Community senator in the Belgian Senate for N-VA.

He graduated in law from the University of Gent.
