General Francis Richard Dannatt, Baron Dannatt Knight Grand Cross of The Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, was born on 23rd December 1950 in Broomfield, Essex. He is a retired British Army officer, and since 2009 he has been the 159th Constable of the Tower of London. He had the command of the British Forces in operations in Kosovo, Bosnia and also the Middle East after the attacks of 11th September 2001. In August 2006 General Dannatt was appointed Chief of the General Staff.

Political Career[edit]

Lord Dannatt has been Senior Adviser for Joule Africa, Capita Symonds and Board of Imeon Logistic. He is Chairman of the Strategic Development Board at the Durham Global Security Institute. Between 2009 and 2010, he served as a Defence Adviser to David Cameron for the general election. He was created a Life Peer by David Cameron when he was leader of the Opposition. Although nominated for the Conservative Party, he opted to sit as a crossbencher and was ennobled as Baron Dannatt in 2010.

Education[edit]

Francis Dannatt studied at St. Lawrence College in Ramsgate, Kent, where he joined the Combined Cadet Force and eventually rose to senior under-officer. When he was a teenage boy, he decided to become a lawyer and applied to study law at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He was turned down, so he chose a career in the military.

Notable Work[edit]

Lord Donnatt has served as a Trustee of the Windsor Leadership Trust since 2005 and as Patron of Hope and Homes for Children since 2006.
