Bryan Davies

Bryan Davies was born on the 9th November 1939. He represents the Labour Party in the House of Lords.

Political Career[edit]

From 2003 to 2010 he served as the Government Deputy Chief Whip in the House of Lords. Along with this position he held the position of Captain of the Yeoman Guard. During the period 1965-74, he worked as a trade union official in the National Association for Teachers in Further and Higher Education. He became a member of the Transport and General Workers Union in 1979. His first seat in parliament was Enfield North, a seat in which he held from 1974 until 1979.

He later went on to become the MP for Oldham Central and Royton from 1992 until the seat was abolished due to boundary changes. Davies was made a peer in 1997, receiving the title Baron Davies of Oldham, of Broxbourne in the County of Hertfordshire. He has also served as the Secretary to the Parliamentary Labour Party and Shadow Cabinet from 1979 until 1992. During his time in parliament, Lord Davies served on a number of committees, the most recent being from 2005-2010 on the ‘Joint Committee on Security’.

His most recent post in the UK parliament was as Shadow Spokesperson for Wales.

Education[edit]

He was educated at Redditch County High School, Worcestershire. He then moved on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1961. He then moved on to study a PHD at the Institute of Education in 1962. After this he went on to study at the London School of Economics, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in economics in 1969.
