Germany’s Studio Babelsberg, one of the major film and TV production facilities in Europe and Shanghai Film Group, one of the biggest film production companies in China, have signed a strategic agreement. The partnership aims to pool Chinese and European resources in order to foster mutual understanding and develop national film industries.

The film industry is one of the most powerful and accessible platform for cultural diplomacy. It's a great tool to educate, intensify and strengthen relationships, to break stereotypes and go beyond any borders. The agreement was signed in the context of a lavish ceremony at the Shanghai Film Festival by Ren Zhonglun and Wang Xiaojun, president and vice president of Shanghai Film Group and Charlie Wöbcken and Christoph Fisser, CEO and COO of Studio Babelsberg.

Charlie Wöbcken sees this pact as a great chance for Babelsberg Studio to hop on international expansion in China. “We had already been having talks with the Shanghai Film Group for some time, and have spoken with many potential partners in China. The Shanghai Film Group is the ideal partner for a partnership. The Shanghai Film Group and Studio Babelsberg have a great tradition and many successful references. We want to work together on establishing a joint ‘Production Service’ unit in Shanghai, which will be able to realize major international film projects in China, according to international standards. In addition, we are looking at international co-productions where a fruitful exchange of know-how can exist on both sides.”

The goal of the partnership is the development of international business activities, mutual production services on an international level, collaboration on co-productions and also the modernization of the Shanghai Film Group’s Studio complex in China.
