Baroness Goudie

Mary Goudie was born on the 2nd September, 1946. She represents the Labour Party in the House of Lords.

Political Career[edit]

Goudie’s first foray into politics came in 1971 when she became the youngest woman elected to the London Borough of Brent Council. During her time on the Council she contributed to the creation of a Housing Association for the Borough. She also organised the RT Hon Lord Hattersley’s campaign to become deputy leader of the Labour Party. In 1998 she was made a life peer in the House of Lords. During her time in the House of Lords she has served on a number of committees. The first committee she served upon was the ‘EU Sub-Committee E Justice and Institutions’ from 1998-2000. The last committee she served upon was the ‘Soft Power Committee’ from 2013 to 2014.

Goudie also co-chairs a number of All Party Groups, including the Communications Committee, the Procedures Committee and the European Committee on Law and the Constitution. In the House of Lords she mainly campaigns on issues concerning women and children. For instance, she is vice chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Equality Group.

Education[edit]

She was educated at Our Lady of the Visitation in Greenford, London. She then moved on to study at Our Lady of St Anselm School, Hayes.

Notable Work[edit]

She sponsors a blog which is dedicated to raising the profile of issues related to human rights, human trafficking, gender equality and the rights of children. She is on the board of directors of Vital Voices Global Partnership which involves training business and community leaders on social and political issues that are occurring round the world. Due to her outstanding contribution she has received a number of awards including the 2010 Global Power Award by the Centre for Women Policy Studies and in 2011 she received the Womensphere Global Leadership Award.
