Alexandros Kontos

Alexandros Kontos was born in Xanthi in 1960. He is a Greek politician who has been elected six consecutive times as MP with the New Democracy since 2000.

Political Career[edit]

In 2001 Alexandros Kontos was elected Deputy Sector Manager for Agriculture in New Democracy. In charge of the Agriculture, he toured across the country highlighting the problems of Greek countryside and showing the positions of the factions. He had a decisive contribution to the training program of the government of New Democracy for the development of the agricultural sector and has been one of the leading makers of the positions on the issue of Panotokia, safeguarding the public nature of A.T.E, measures to reduce the cost of production of agricultural products and the consolidation of the cooperative movement, as well as agricultural and infrastructure modernization in agriculture. In the national elections of 2004 he was elected first MP in votes in the county of Xanthi and the President of New Democracy, Konstantinos Karamanlis appointed him Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food. After the national elections of September 2007, in which he was re-elected MP in the county of Xanthi, he took office as Minister of Rural Development and Food, a position he held until January 2009. In the elections of September 2009, he was elected with New Democracy in the county of Xanthi. In February 2012, he was appointed Head of Sector for Regional Policy in the New Democracy Party. In the national elections of May 2012, he was re-elected as a member of the parliament, as well as the elections of June 2012. Before his election to the Greek Parliament, he had a strong effect on the government. In 1994 he became first in the vote for Prefectural Advisor by the prefecture. This success was repeated in the 1998 regional elections.

Alexandros Kontos is a graduate of the Industrial School of Thessaloniki.

Alexandros Kontos is the author of two books "The Fruition of an Effort" and "The Other Agriculture and the Environment."
