'''An exhibition featuring six Chinese women painter’s works was held in the Egyptian Ebassy in China. Ink paintings showcased the works of Xie Lifang, Luo Ying, li Daimei, Zhao Yi, Xu Qiping and Huang Huan. The artists drew inspiration for their paintings from their time in Egypt.'''

With the support of the Ministry of Culture of both China and Egypt, the artists traveled to Egypt to showcase their paintings at an art exhibition. They also attended a workshop in Cairo.

The event, an important aspect of the 2016 China-Egypt Cultural Year, aims to promote cultural exchange between the two nations. The goal is to educate artists about the culture and traditions of the respective country.

In the past, artists and individuals from all backgrounds did not have the opportunity to experience first hand the Egyptian culture. However, this cultural exchange seeks to change that.
'''Lanny Cordola is a former guitarist from Los Angeles. After playing non-stop in the 80’s and 90’s on several American stages with different rock bands, he decided to stop touring and dedicate his time to teaching children how to play guitar in Kabul For two years now, he provided underprivileged girls the great opportunity to learn to play an instrument against the background of a country torn apart the way and marked by frequent suicide attacks.'''

The number of girls attending the school has definitely increased, from 20 to 50 students. The young pupils normally learn to play West bands tracks’, but also songs about hope and peace belonging to their cultural tradition. The event that moved Lanny Cordola to undertake this long path from the United Stated to Afghanistan was the story of two little girls, Parwana and Khorshid.

The two sisters were killed in a suicide attack in the Kabul NATO headquarter. Their smiling faces are now drawn on the wall of the apartment used for the school of music. Lanny’s dream is to extend his project into an international phenomenon. His hope is for the young girls to cooperate with other girls and children from around the world. This can be a great opportunity for underprivileged you.
'''Institute Cervantes is a public institution attached to the Spanish Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Its main function is to promote Spanish and other languages in Spain – Catalan, Euskera and Galician – and to diffuse the Hispanic culture around the globe. Nowadays, it is the most important institution when it comes to Spanish-speaking culture as it equally promotes, with great vocation, the Latin American Culture. It carries out significant activities worldwide and this year they have a plan to spread Spanish throughout Africa.'''

Her Majesty the Queen Letizia of Spain presided the act in the central headquarters in Madrid. She remarked the importance of the institute as it empowers and promotes not only the Spanish culture from Spain but from Central and South America as well. She noted that nearly 70% of the institute’s activity is in collaboration with other Latin American public institutions.

On the other hand, the President of the Institute Cervantes, Victor García de la Concha, presented "Plan África" during the last annual meeting of the institute. He remarked that the institute should open an orrice in Africa in order to ensure a project of cultural prosperity.

The principal formula is to open a new headquarter or to share a building with other similar institutions such as the Goethe Institut. Nowadays the only headquarters are located in the African Magreb (Marroco, Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt) and in Dakar, Senegal.

The plan seeks to spread the Spanish language to all the countries in Africa. Another area of expansion is Asia, where the demand for learning Spanish is growing.
'''At the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, the Pre-Departure Press Conference declared the opening of ‘TAIWANfest 2016’ held in Toronto and Vancouver, Canada. A series of cultural events featuring Taiwanese art and culture and celebrating Canadian multiculturalism will take place from August 26th. After 26 years, the TAIWANfest has become one of the largest cultural festivals in Canada promoting cultural exchanges and enhancing bilateral relationship between Taiwan and Canada.'''

Originally established by the Vancouver Taiwanese community in 1990, the TAIWANfest features rich multi-cultural contents such as food, music, dance, film, celebrations and the mixture of traditional and modern lifestyles. The events not only promote Taiwanese culture, but also build relations between Taiwanese culture and Canadian culture. With the government’s support, the Taiwanese people are able to display and promote their culture to the Canadian public.

Struggling with the national identity issues between Taiwan and China, Taiwan’s outreach to other countries in the world is often limited. However, it has found its way to tie with the world through soft powers. Its strategy is to promote the visibility of Taiwan through cultural events, attracting the world with interactions and exchanges in communities. Several cultural events are held in different countries.
The TAIWANfest in Canada is Taiwan’s biggest cultural event abroad.

Drawing for the cultural exchange that exists between Taiwan and Hong Kong, this year, it will further bring in other Asian cultures by the launch of five year program ‘Dialogue with Asia’. By inviting other countries to join the program, the government aims to enrich the contents of cultural exchange and promote participation of the fest.

The Ministry of Culture in Taiwan points out that a cultural display is not enough to connect Taiwan to other parts of the world. Cultural dialogues and exchanges have to be added so that people from different cultures can get to know each other better.

This year’s TAIWANfest will be held at Toronto's Harbourfront Center from August 26th to 28th, followed by cultural events which will continue in Vancouver from September 3rd to 5th.
'''Wild Pony Play, fairytale palaces and hospitable people who are proud of their great culture- all that meets the visitors who are traveling on the Silk Road through Uzbekistan. The ARTE Channel encourages the German public to a mesmerizing virtual trip across Uzbekistan.'''

The Central Asian country shares its borders to the north with Kazakhstan and on the south with Afghanistan. The journey starts in Samarkand and via Boysun, Termez and Shahrisabz in the capital Tashkent and Bukhara to Khiva from along the ancient trade route.

For centuries fairytale cities such as Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva offered trade caravans on the Silk Road, the necessary infrastructure to turn over their goods and to accommodate people and animals. Many buildings still bear witness to the splendour and wealth that brought the trade in the oasis towns.

Professor Ashur Eschpulatow said that Samarkand has many different types of ancient architecture. For example, one may find the three magnificent madrassas, madrasahs called on the Registan Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Samarkand, the precious silk carpets have been made for centuries. In the process of manufacturing, the silk is dyed using unique traditional methods. Only the Afghan master-dyer knows the secret- how long the walnut shells must be cooked to achieve the exact shade. In the region Boysun in the Hissar mountains to Navroz celebration the ancient, gruff Rider game Kopkari takes place.

More than a hundred riders try to pick up Ziegenbalg from the floor and ride away with the trophy. In his birthplace Shahrisabz, the Uzbek folk hero Amir Timur (Tamerlane) erected his gigantic palace Ak Saray in 1380. Inside, one can find 100 bejeweled rooms. On the day of the glorious Timur the restorer Aziz prepares a picnic with the Uzbek national dish Palov, which mainly consists of rice, mutton and carrots.

The documentary shown on ARTE, is nothing but a trip to Uzbekistan highlights teh fascinating landscape. Howeover, the documentary also shows the problems the country faces such as the salinization of fields through the extensive cotton cultivation and restricted press freedom.

'''The report, submitted at the end of July, underlines the relevance of cultural diversity for sustainable development and the many activities organized by the Federal Government, Länder, municipalities and civil society, seeking to enhance cultural diversity in Germany.'''

The Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions was adopted in 2005 by the UNESCO General Conference. This allows the States Parties to define their own cultural policy, submitting a country report regarding the application of the latter in their countries every four years. The Convention is particularly important in so far as it allows for the exchange of experiences and examples of the best practices in the various countries. It was ratified by Germany in 2007.

In fact, cultural diversity exists and it must be considered as a major value in our time. That is what German cities, such as Hannover, Heidelberg or Mannheim have done so far: they promoted their status of UNESCO City of Music and Literature in order to increase their development. Because culture does not mean only art or tradition. Culture is a combination of several elements which are able to contribute to the growth of a reality: Länder, for example, mixed up both cultural education and cultural tourism in order to boost their regional development.

This second report was submitted under the direction of the Federal Foreign Office and the guidance of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as the expert assistance of the German Commission for UNESCO. As the Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, Maria Böhmer, stated “[the Convention] is a highly relevant instrument of international law [and] it is intended to make the political scope for fostering diversity and cultural policy, also at international level, fit for the future in the face of increasing trade liberalisation”.

'''This weekend Berlin hosted a festival of short films from Eastern Europe and the Middle East. 12 countries met in Berlin thanks to the support of European union and Kühlhaus Berlin. The festival showed 15 movies in 4 sets on Friday and Saturday.'''

CineEast served as a platform for filmmakers from Eastern Europe and the Middle East to introduce their work to public outside of their countries of origin. Despite that this was the first year of the festival, more than 800 movies were submitted. From these the festival's director Katrine Majlund Jensen chose 15. These movies represented Eastern Europe and the Middle East in their artistic creativity.

The program itself was focused on artistic quality, which meant great diversity for the festival. Both regions and genders were represented equally. The program included student films as well movies that were in the Berlinale or in the world´s most important short film festivals.

However, there is not only the artistic message behind the festival. The director's reasoning behind the choice of regions is very simple - “last summer (2015) some media's coverage and some politicians rhetoric about the escalating migrant crisis in Europe became oriented almost only towards a question of numbers. This is relevant and an inevitable discussion, but for my part it increased an urge to dwell into the background of the regions that were in the spotlight”.

The festival aimed to shape forming ideas about other people's cultures and understand what does it mean to be human and be situated in society . Art is the ultimate interpretation of these topics and film is a very accessible art form, as well as a medium that a lot of people are familiar with.
'''The year 2016 marks the UK-Russia Year of Language and Literature which celebrates rich literary traditions of the UK and Russia together with their widely spoken languages. Part of the celebration is a special Shakespeare Moscow metro carriages.'''

This year's celebrations are organized by the British Council and the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with VisitBritain and UK Trade and Investment.

To mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death the British Council, together with the Moscow Metro, launched a special “Shakespeare train” and the “Poetry on the Metro” project.

The train explores the development of expressing emotions since Shakespeare's times - “four hundred years ago we might have written poems and sung songs or confided secrets in letters and diaries, today we express ourselves through private messaging and public posting, with increasing concision through photos and emoji”.

The exterior of the carriages is decorated with photos of Muscovites magically transported to the Shakespeare's times. Each portrait is accompanied by emoji for love, hate, power, conflict and so on. Inside, people can find same emojis illustrating Shakespeare´s quotations.

At the end of each carriage there are “selfie points”, and throughout the train links can be found to a free mini-site accessible via the Metro wifi, where passengers can learn more about the playwrights, download an Emoji Shakespeare app and enter competitions with prizes including a trip to Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon.

Among other initiatives, the celebrations also include open online courses based on Shakespeare's works, TheatreHD programs in more than 40 Russian cities, joint exhibitions at the State Tretyakov Gallery Moscow and the National Portrait Gallery in London, Shakespeare Olympiad for 150,000 schoolchildren across Russia and the 17th New British Film Festival.
Barcelona, the Inter-American Bank for Development and the Japanese Government, to contribute to improve the health of the population, stimulate healthy habits between the youngsters with the main goal of supporting the integral development of vulnerable individuals.'''

“Neglected diseases are diseases of inequity. They are mainly poverty related diseases. They affect many millions of people worldwide, even if they have treatment and they could be eradicated”. These are the words of Silvia Gold, President of the Mundo Sano Foundation, when they signed their collaboration contract with the Spanish football team F.C. Barcelona. And one of these neglected diseases is among the general public almost unknown, the tropical disease Chagas.

Globally, 65 million people are at risk of contracting the disease and between 7 and 8 million are infected. Also, each year, at least 12 thousand people die because of Chagas disease, 28 thousand new cases occur and 8,000 new-borns are infected during their mother’s pregnancy. It is considered a “silent” disease because the symptoms characteristics of the acute phase (fever, headache, swollen glands) may be nonspecific and therefore misinterpreted or confused with other less dangerous and non-chronic diseases.

That is why, through this initiative the Mundo Sano Foundation seeks to raise awareness between those who are most at risk and also improve the diagnosis and treatment of Chagas. With sport as a tool to reach children, mothers, fathers and professional teams, the program is expected to improve access to treatment and spread prevention habits.

Neglected diseases such as Chagas, Dengue or the now sadly famous Zika affect around 1,500 million people worldwide and are characterized by being neglected in the priorities of public health, mainly because they affect populations living in poor socioeconomic conditions with poor access to health services.

This project may not solve the problem or even get close to solving them, but initiatives such as this one, where different private and public partners from entirely different countries (from South America, Europe and Asia) work together to reach the maximum number of people, show how private-public collaborations in the domain of cultural diplomacy can also have important humanitarian implications.
'''For several years, the restaurant Boragó has been ranked as the most influential in Chile, one of the most respected in Latin America and also one of the most valued in the world. Chef Rodolfo Guzman’s secret is that he is not only innovative with food, but also thinks in culture, works with philosophy and leads a revolution in the local cuisine.'''

The flavors travel from one corner of Chile to another. The colors, flavors and textures are surprising. On the one hand, an international food critic can eat covertly whilst culinary students are unable to figure out the chef’s secrets. On the second floor of the restaurant Boragó, however, everything changes. The dark lighting is reminiscent of Rembrandt’s paintings; the rows of books evoke the feeling of a public library; the jars of catalogued herbs would fit in well in the study of a master herbalist in the eighteenth century; and the blackboards covering the walls of the room are full with a multitude of notes which could have been written by a scientist trying to solve an equation.

In this space, restricted for many, the chef Rodolfo Guzmán, perhaps the most important in Latin America today, speaks not only of cooking, but also talks about the results of anthropological research, long conversations with biologists, the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples and their experiences in innovation, encouragement of creativity, and development of intuition.

It is known for the fusion of society, culture and cuisine, which unites people. Guzmán wanted to create a restaurant which was unique and Chile was a the ideal location due to the availability of the highest quality ingredients, such as marine products, wild fruits, fungi and algae. So he began a long journey: the long learning process which was the beginning of this restaurant.

Besides innovating every day in his laboratory of ideas, Rodolfo Guzmán divides his time between writing three books, publishing projects in parallel with biologists and anthropologists, and generating papers which contribute to the development of food culture. He says: "this is much more than a business, is something else, is not only a money exchange for food, not about that at all, is to demonstrate how the union of people through food and culture is possible.”

'''The ‘World Cosplay Championship 2016’, held in Nagoya, Japan, has a new world champion. The 2016 winner is the team from Indonesia with a performance from “Trinity Blood”. Denmark took 2nd place with a performance from “The Angel of Elhalmburg”. The 3rd place was given to France, for its performance from “Love Live! School Idol Festival”.'''

The "Cosplay" is one of the modes of Japan’s cultural diplomacy that is successfully implemented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan of late. It enjoys strong international popularity in recent years. Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been conferring a Foreign Minister's Prize for the best costume-player in "the World Cosplay Summit", the biggest annual Cosplay event in Japan, since 2007. Cosplay is part of the Otaku culture, and Manga.

Japan's Manga and Anime culture have been influencing various people worldwide. They were not satisfied by just "reading" and "watching" but instead wanted to "be the characters and act as them". As a result, the Cosplay culture was born.

The World Cosplay Summit began in 2003 in Nagoya Japan to create a new sense of international friendship with cosplayers from all over the world. Year after year, the number of participating countries has been increasing. In 2012, the number grew to 20 countries. Now, many cosplayers from around the world aim to get to the Cosplay Holy Land; namely Nagoya, Japan.

The ‘World Cosplay Summit’ is the world’s largest cosplay event. It’s acquired official status among cosplay enthusiasts, with 2016 being its 14th consecutive year. With over 30 countries participating in the event, this event is like the Olympic Games for cosplay. This year, India, Switzerland, Canada, and Sweden joined the party, and for a whole week (July 30 – August 7) cosplay fans had the chance to see some of the most elaborate costumes ever created. The World Cosplay Championship was held during the last day of the Summit. Last year’s winners Mexico, tried to protect their title but in the end it was Rian Cahyadi and Marchella from the Indonesian team that won the championship.

The World Cosplay Championship is where representatives from each country display their best performances on stage. The judges don’t just judge the quality of participants' costumes but also the art direction and overall performance. It is the ultimate world championship of the Cosplay. The final parade took place in Osu, Nagoya, where the World Cosplay Summit was born.

It is to be pointed out that Japan’s anime diplomacy is a part of Japan’s cultural diplomacy. Realized by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan is nothing but a successful unique way of communicating the image of a modern, forward-leaning and culturally advanced country to the whole world.

The Breakthrough Prizes has a long history of honouring important breakthroughs in physics, life sciences, and mathematics. The meeting between Pete Worden and the Jordanian Crown Prince focused on ways to cooperate between the their respective foundations in the framework of supporting, enabling and providing Jordanian young people with a platform to develop their capabilities and creativity. Such a goal can benefit from the key involvement of the initiatives and the expertise offered by the American prestigious institution.

The meeting highlighted the possibility for Jordan to play a leading role in the Foundation’s programs in the Middle East, particularly in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge Award, that aims at stimulating high school student’s skills in making short videos on their interpretation of several different scientific phenomena.
'''The fourth event in the Alumni Mentorship Program took place in July at Microsoft Berlin. It focused on entrepreneurship and the process of designing, launching and running a new business.'''

Two panelists at the event were John Hasler and Markus Streichhardt from Fulbright, a program administered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the United States Department of State. The Fulbright Program operates under policy guidelines established by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) and works in cooperation with a number of private organizations.

The third panelist was Angelo Juric from the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. Through short-term visits to the United States, current and emerging foreign leaders in a variety of fields can experience the country firsthand and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts. Professional meetings reflect the participants’ professional interests and support the foreign policy goals of the United States.

The panelists spoke with 40 young professionals in Berlin, many of whom are also USG program alumni. The mentors shared their personal experiences in the field and gave advice for budding entrepreneurs, before moving into the networking portion of the event. There, the mentors and mentees had the opportunity meet and connect as both alumni and professionals, and expand their network.

The program began at 16:00 with a welcome address by U.S. Embassy officials and Microsoft, followed by a Career Panel on Entrepreneurship at 16:15. It finished at 18:00 with the final networking meetings.

The Alumni Mentorship Program seeks to link U.S. sponsored exchange alumni with the established alumni community. Fostering this relationship emphasizes the importance of using knowledge and lessons learned from their exchange program when they return to their home country. This program also provides valuable work experience for young alumni, builds stronger ties within the alumni network, and encourages senior alumni to play active roles.
'''The 26th edition of the international dance festival was co-organized by the French Institute in Berlin, The Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Canada Council for Arts. The special focus of this year's festival was on the affinity between the visual arts, the Asian dance scene and the local Berlin scene.'''

The festival was once again organised by Virve Sutinen, who studied Performance Studies in New York and headed leading dance institutions in Helsinki and Stockholm for many years. Sutinen represents different generations of artists and the aesthetics of humor and experimentation. In addition to large companies, she presents a number of newcomers and Berlin debuts.

This year, the focus is on contemporary classics and new works by both international choreographers and those from Berlin. Intimacy, collectivity and the experiences of belonging and exclusion are issues around which the positions of 24 artists revolve. Special attention is paid to the affinity between the visual arts and dance. For the first time there will be a retrospective dedicated to the British choreographer Rosemary Butcher.
Another focus is on the growing Asian dance scene. A novelty of this year's festival is the integration of choreographers from Berlin, which sets a clear commitment to the local dance scene.

The program is characterized by artists from several generations and invites its audience to discover numerous artists who are hardly known in Berlin.

The festival also hosts a special library: a temporary reading room to introduce the worlds of the artists. It is a dedicated space for people to meet and exchange ideas. Open throughout the festival, its collection includes books suggested by the artists involved in Tanz im August 2016. The organizers have asked the artists to name three volumes that they believe can serve as reference books for their work.
'''The art exhibition ‘Rizal through the Eyes of Artists’ is held at the Philippine Embassy in in Kurfürstendamm Berlin from July 29th to August 12th. The exhibition aims to celebrate the Philippines’ upcoming National Heroes Day and honor the late National hero Jose Rizal. With artists presenting Rizal’s image in different forms, the exhibit shows the historical and cultural contents to the public.'''

The national hero Jose Rizal was the Filipino nationalist who initiated the reform of Spanish rule in the Philippines. He was a patriot, physician and author. His literary works were inspirations of the Philippine national movements. In addition to celebrating National Heroes Day on August 29th, this exhibition will honor his 155th Birth Anniversary held on June 19th.

With a formal opening held on July 28th, the visual art exhibition is organized by the Philippine Embassy in Berlin and Transwing Art Gallery. The works of Arnel Garcia, Rene Robles. Ronna Manansala, and Ferdinand Ruiz are on display. Over 50 Filipinos and Germans attended the opening vernissage. During the vernissage, Filipino merienda was served and poems of Rizal were delivered.

Pampanga-based artist Arnel David Garcia talked about his art work. In his work, relief sculptures (resin and mixed media) were used to present Rizal. One of the interpretations split Rizal’s face into several parts to show the hero’s various facets. Another sculpture placed Rizal together with leaders who have significant impacts on people, such as Jesus Christ and Mao Tse-tung.

Ferdinand Rae Ruiz, a Bulacan-based painter and graphic artists presented his acrylic rendition ‘Rizal Map,’ which shows Rizal’s picture with a backdrop map composed of the places the hero visited in Europe.
Ronna Manansala’s oil rendition applied bold brush strokes to show Rizal. She is the granddaughter of the Philippines’ National Artist, Vicente Manansala.

‘Rizal through the Eyes of Artists’ is open for visit from Monday to Friday, between 09:00 to 16:00, from July 29th to August 12th, at the Philippine Embassy located on the 2nd Floor Haus Cumberland, Kurfürstendamm 194, 10707 Berlin.
'''H. E. Ambassador Martin Ney, together with a few other diplomats, met the Indian Minister of Food Processing Industries, Harsimrat Kaur Badal. The meeting, which focused on India’s recent initiative to open food retail for Foreign Direct Investment, marks the starting point of a future collaboration in the Processed Food Industry Sector.'''

On August 3, the Ambassador of Germany in India met the Indian Minister of Food Processing Industry, Harsimrat Kaur Badal. A number of other diplomats coming from countries such as France, Poland, Australia, Italy and China also took part at the event.

The key subject of the discussions was the initiative that India has recently adopted, regarding opening the food retail for Foreign Direct Investment. The Minister briefed the diplomats present at the event about the vast opportunities available in India. She also shared the fact that the Ministry of Food Processing Industries would be providing facilitation for all foreign investors who would like to invest in the food-processing sector in the country.

As far as the Ambassador Martin Ney affirmed, Germany welcomes India’s initiative to open food retail for FDI. Actually, India and Germany have been partners in the food sector for a considerable period now, and this new initiative can only improve this cooperation.

While the discussion focused on the cooperation in the food sector, it can be also extended to the cultural and diplomatic field. Increasing cooperation between the two countries in the PFI sector shows the already existing strong bond between Germany and India can facilitate taking the next step in cultural cooperation.
'''This year’s Young Euro Classic Festival welcomes for the first time a unique orchestra formed by musicians from the Youth Orchestras of Romania and Moldova. The concert will take place at the Berlin Konzerthaus on August 26th. The joint collaboration project was created in 2014, bringing the two neighboring countries once again closer together.'''

The project was founded as a joint idea between the Artistic Director of the Romanian Youth Orchestra, Marin Cazacu, and the Orchestra Conductor Cristian Mandeal. Its successful debut was in February 2015 at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest. Three quarters of the 90-members-mighty orchestra stems from the Romanian Youth Orchestra, while one quarter stems from the Youth Orchestra of the Republic of Moldova.

These cultural music projects are a novelty themselves: The Romanian Youth Orchestra was founded in the 2008, while the Youth Orchestra of the Republic of Moldova came into being in the 2013. The fact that their collaborative spirit thrives at such an early point in their existence showcases the enthusiastic uniting power of young talents coming together.

On this very occasion, the repertoire will be focused on reflecting the fullness of the rich Easter European musical opus. It will begin with the 1903 Suite for Orchestra No.1 in C-Major by Romanian composer George Enescu. This piece is a mélange of traditional Romanian folk music, French elegance and German expressivity.

The repertoire will continue with a selection of the most famous excerpts of the passionate 1936 Suite 2 Op. 64 from the classic ballet “Romeo and Juliet”, by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. The showcase of skills within the musical endeavour will end with Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky’s “Rococo Variations”, starring the skills of the 22-year old talented Romanian cellist Andrei Ioniţă.

The exemplar young artist pursues his musical studies at the Berlin Universität der Künste and has already been internationally recognized receiving multiple awards such as the first place at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, twice second place at the ARD classical music competition in Munich and at the Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann in Berlin.

The concert paves the path for a cultural reunion between the two countries. Although the two countries share a similar culture, their political trajectory has taken different routes. The Republic of Moldova experienced isolation during the Soviet Era when the Soviet Union treated the territory as one of its own.

The event is, among other, is supported and sponsored by the Romanian Cultural Institute in Berlin, as well as the Youth and Sports Ministry of the Republic of Moldova, the Edelweiss Foundation for the Development of the Republic of Moldova, the “Romanian Youth” National Arts Centre, the “Serafim Antropov Music Friends” Foundation and the Spanish “Gas Natural Fenosa” energy company.

'''Associate Professor Dr. Kheswar Jankee, you have been the Ambassador of Mauritius to Germany here in Berlin since September 2015, how have you enjoyed the position so far and what has been the main focus of your work since you started?'''

Indeed, the appointment of ambassador is an important milestone in my life and career. After the official ceremony with the President in September 2015, I was proud to see our national flag being hoisted. I feel privileged to be appointed as ambassador in such an important leading country like Germany which is a center of excellence and the heart of Europe. This is an important responsibility and my objective is to bring Mauritius and Germany closer in further consolidating trade, cultural and diplomatic relations.

'''For what reasons did you decide to become a diplomat?'''

I always maintain that I am not a diplomat by career but my career in terms of my professional and work experiences has made me a diplomat. I have been a teacher, economist at the Bank of Mauritius , associate professor at the University of Mauritius and occupied important positions at the national level such as Chairman of national savings fund and Development bank of Mauritius. In addition, my involvement as an economic activist with economic policies , interest in political affairs and international exposure have shaped my destiny to become an ambassador. I have accepted this position with all humility and determination to work for my country.

'''How important do you think the role of being the Ambassador of Mauritius to Germany is?'''

The government of Mauritius is expecting a lot from the Embassy at Berlin and the mission is already working on a plan of action to increase visibility, connect with diaspora, consolidate bilateral relations, integrate with different groups of ambassadors and promote trade and investment. As the representative of Mauritius, I should work in line with the economic agenda and social objectives of my country.

'''How have the relations between Germany and Mauritius changed after the years and in what ways is the Embassy of Mauritius in Berlin promoting its cultural heritage?'''

Mauritius started diplomatic relations with Germany in 1968, right after its independence .. In 2000, Mauritius decided to set up this Embassy to promote its diplomatic links with Germany. Mauritius is a country with an extremely interesting history, which owes a lot to cultural diversity. What is the role of an ambassador in Germany? Today I believe the traditional role has shifted from keeping strong diplomatic relations to the promotion of trade and economic relations.

This is especially true for Mauritius, whose economic landscape is rapidly changing, on par with the rest of the developed world. Mauritius is at a crossroad: we want to move from a middle income economy to high income. At this stage major economic transformations and reforms are being planned. Clearly, since Mauritius sees in Germany a center of excellence for the quality of its institutions and its best practices, my mission as ambassador is to make Germany a partner in the future development of Mauritius.

'''What does His Excellency consider to be the most important issues of cooperation between the Republic of Mauritius and Germany and in which areas do you think there is space for improvement?'''

In my role of ambassador, my focus is on three main issues. The first is to increase Mauritius’ visibility on German media: I want Germans to know more about Mauritius as a country, and not only as major touristic destination. The second is the promotion of foreign investments and trade between Mauritius and Germany, which is part of my mission of economic diplomacy: Mauritius is a land with many business opportunities, and both German and Mauritian institutions are actively seeking to promote bilateral economic relations. The third is to connect with Mauritian diaspora and tap their expertise.

'''Remarkable achievements obtained by the Embassy (being them of diplomatic, economic, social or cultural nature); past or upcoming events related to the Embassy.'''

In addition to benefiting from various training programs and scholarships from Germany, there has been an unprecedented increase in the amount of students coming to study in Germany and moreover, an upward trend in German tourists to Mauritius.

A very interesting cultural event which the mission has organized since my installation is the celebration of our national independence day . In order to connect with the diaspora, I invited all Mauritians in Berlin and nearby cities. Additionally, I am very proud to say that our embassy is extremely active also in other fields.

My officers are promoting foreign investments , establishing links with universities and research institutes, working on training programs for diplomats, sports, and exploring ways to promote the Mauritius opera and film industry. Focus is laid on the emerging sectors of the economy such as the Blue economy, medical hub , education hub and Tourist/ leisure destination.

'''How would you define Cultural Diplomacy instead, and what does it mean to you? How can we use cultural diplomacy to strengthen the relations between Mauritius and Germany?'''

For me cultural diplomacy is the exchange of information and ideas among different people and institutions. Why information and ideas?

Because we need to have mutual understanding, among different countries. Once we have gained adequate understanding about each other, finding solutions to both petty and grand problems of our society can be easier and faster. Culture embraces a huge variety of subjects: there is culture in religion, in sports, even attitude is a reflection of culture. Coming to Mauritius, I believe the island is a showcase of cultural diversity.

Mauritius is a place where cultures and languages had mixed. The first to settle had been the Franco-Mauritians, who brought their culture as well as the Afro- Mauritians manpower, slaves from various part of Africa. With the abolition of slavery and the beginning of indentured labor, brought their own culture, Indian- Mauritians came. Finally, with the annexation of the island into the British Empire, Chinese and other European minorities came, bringing with them the uniqueness of their own heritages. For all these coexisting cultures, Mauritius can very well be considered as a world in itself- something we are really proud of, probably even more than the natural beauties the island has to offer.

When I think about what is happening in the world today, I feel extremely privileged to come from a country which such a strong social cohesion as Mauritius. People from all around the world come to Mauritius to witness our “Unity in Diversity” and find those elements that keep our society sturdy together. I believe the key elements are our respect towards other cultures and religions and our mutual understanding, which are only possible thanks to our propensity to share.

'''Can you give us an example of a time in which you were involved in successful cultural dialogue and how do you see the role of Cultural Diplomacy today?'''

Being a professor I have realized that talking is essential if we want to spread our culture and our diversity. I remember when I went to Berlin Economic Forum at ICD House, where I talked about Mauritius and the importance of culture. In fact, I believe the world today is more focused towards material growth, but they are missing cultural growth, which I believe to be of pivotal importance. I congratulate institutions like ICD that are actively promoting cultural diplomacy in the world.

If countries around the world understand that cultural links and people are of equal importance to, and not less important than economic growth, I believe the majority of world’s social issues could be solved more easily. I am strongly convinced this is one the reasons why many economists are starting to use new indexes, like the Happiness Index or the Quality of Life Index.

However, studying foreign cultures is just as important as spreading your own. When people do business abroad, they are most likely doomed to fail if they don’t have enough understanding of the culture of the country they want to work in. I have found myself in the same situation when I started to work here as Ambassador, and I realized that I had to read about German history and culture if I wanted to deal with Germans.

This example could be very well generalized – people should have strong knowledge of one country’s culture if they want to have the most complete understanding and deal successfully with its citizens. This is part of my activity and also part of yours.

'''Do you believe tourism in Mauritius can be a good mean to spread your culture abroad? If so, how? Can you provide an example?'''

Up to now, tourism has been a very thriving and profitable activity in Mauritius. The number of German tourists visiting Mauritius is growing, thanks to the joint work of our Minister of Tourism, this embassy and other private business ventures. Tourism can be an excellent mean to spread culture, and I believe it needs to go in both directions; therefore, also Mauritians need to come to Germany and learn more about its culture.

German tourists who go to Mauritius can learn a lot about its culture. For instance, they will notice that we speak a very specific dialect, the Creole, which is a fusion of English and French, although our national languages are English and French. Moreover, they can enjoy the most traditional dance of the island, the Sega Dance, which has African roots.

Lastly, with important Indian and Chinese ethnicities in the island, tourists can see how multicultural and yet harmonious our country is, which I am convinced it’s the true beauty of Mauritius.

'''H.E. the Amb. Has had a clear economic background. What advice would you give to young people who are interested in pursuing a career in international relations or diplomacy, but whose academic career has not begun from international relations?'''

People sometimes take their whole life to understand what they really like to do. For instance now I am very interested in History and Anthropology, because I believe these two subjects are lenses through which you can interpret major events in the world today. Economy is my pet subject, and it will give you a very good insight about the world economy. However, other dimensions, like History and Sociology are just as important, and I recommend students who wish to pursue a diplomatic career to study them on par with their major studies.

'''Mauritius is a marvelous island, with an extremely rich biodiversity that has made it one of the favorite destinations for luxury tourism. Its population is one of the most variegated on earth, and although geographically is in Africa, the main religion of the country is Hinduism. Do you think your cultural diversity has contributed to Mauritius’ prosperity and that it will contribute to its wellbeing in the future?'''

Definitely. We should fight and make sure that given any economic strategy we pursue or any material growth that we have, there is a fair distribution of wealth, economic and social justice. By justice I mean that the distribution of material wealth should include all the different ethnicities, religious beliefs and cultures. In Mauritius we try to grand social equality by granting a Parliament composed by all the various ethnicities on the island, through an election system named “Best Loser System”.

Today, we are proud to say not only that we have been the forerunners of this system, but also that it is giving extremely positive results in our country: our President, Bibi Ameenah Firdaus Gurib-Fakim, is the first women appointed as President of our country, and she comes from the Muslim community; our Prime Minister, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, comes instead from the Hindu community; our Vice President from another community. As symbol as it might seem, it still gives an important message – that in Mauritius religious beliefs or ethnicities are not subject to discrimination, but are rather elevated to the highest positions and we follow an inclusive approach.

Additionally, Mauritius has a strong element of social protection, which is applied to all its citizens. Free education, free healthcare and subsidies are granted to all communities, not only to certain groups. For all this elements I believe Mauritius is a world showcase, and the living embodiment of positive cultural aggregation.

'''Economically, Mauritius is a middle income country, a remarkable result considering not only its starting point after its independency, but also its lack of natural resources and its size. How much do you think cultural diversity has influenced the economic development of your country?'''

As previously mentioned, Mauritius is at a crossroad. We had our first economic miracle in the 1990s, and we’ve always been an example of good governance and best practice for other African countries. Today Mauritius it’s transforming rapidly from manufacturing and agriculture to services. Mauritius aims to become a big platform to serve Africa; we want to provide our services to every country and investor. In order to do so, infrastructure is key: we are developing our port and establishing stronger flight connections with the major Asian and European cities. We’ve always considered our island as a link between Asia and Africa; it’s our ambition to become a link also between Europe and Africa.

Moreover, our economy is going towards Ocean Economy and renewable energies, without forgetting the importance of traditional sectors like tourism. Mauritius needs to be a center of excellence, and we are putting all our efforts to promote education, trade and cultural aggregation. Given this position, we want investors to come to Mauritius and see it as a platform for Africa, and not only as a touristic destination.

Investors have already expressed their interest in Mauritius. Given its stable government, its growing economy fostered by a strong banking system an, efficient bureaucracy and its membership to COMESA and SADC as well as close connections with Europe, Mauritius is an attractive investment destination.

Personally, I have an open door policy at my embassy: people interested to know more about business opportunities, or simply interested about what to do or how much to spend for a trip to Mauritius are welcomed to enter and ask information either to me or to one of my delegates.

'''Would you like to add something at the end?'''

I would like to conclude this interview thanking you so much for this opportunity. Following this interview I hope that people in Germany and Europe will be interested in Mauritius not only for its tourism, but also for its cultural heritage and its many business opportunities.

'''Happy 49th ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Day! The celebration of the 49th anniversary of ASEAN on August 8th, 2016 enabled to recognize the growing diplomatic, economic, and strategic significance of Southeast Asia. This region is one of the most dynamic parts in the world. Since its founding in 1967, ASEAN has advanced a rules-based order for the Asia-Pacific that protects the rights of all nations, large and small. ASEAN’s contributions to peace and stability are critical for economic growth, mutual security and environmental sustainability.'''

ASEAN Day commemorates the five founding fathers of ASEAN from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, who signed the Bangkok Declaration for peace and stability in the region and for the people to prosper and progress.

The key of ASEAN has always been to ensure the safety of the people residing in the Southeastern region. On the socio-cultural front, tangible results of cooperation have already been achieved through education, labour movement, cultural exchanges, poverty alleviation and gender equality.

Almost five decades ago, the Founding Fathers of ASEAN signed the Bangkok Declaration that formally established ASEAN. It was a historic day marking a commitment by the nations of Southeast Asia to work together to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

The celebration of the ASEAN Day this year was for the first time as a single Community. On 31 December 2015, under the chairmanship of Malaysia, the ten ASEAN Member States inaugurated the ASEAN Community. This was a significant milestone for the region, building on the resilience and dynamism that have been the hallmarks of ASEAN.

ASEAN community-building is a continuous and evolving process, and the momentum must be maintained in order to ensure political cohesion, economic integration, and social and regional inclusion. One of the tasks of the Community is to be able to respond effectively to the emerging threats and challenges presented by the rapidly changing regional and global landscape.

The subject selected by Lao PDR as Chairman of ASEAN in 2016, “Turning Vision into Reality for a Dynamic ASEAN Community”, is timely and appropriate. It reflects the collective will of Southeast Asian Nations to continue to integrate the region and solidify the community.

The Prime Minister of Thailand, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, one of the politicians who attended the ASEAN Day 2016 Celebration, commended Ministry of Foreign Affairs for developing a Memorandum of Understanding on Enhancing Knowledge and Understanding of Cultural Diversity in ASEAN which will help promote the nation’s human resource development, through regional and local cooperative network for mobilization of foreign policies within the country between the Government and various sectors.

Filmed at the mountain village where the elderly beloved couple lived for 15 months, the documentary records the love story between Jo (98 years old, husband) and Kang (89 years old, wife). The couple spent their everyday of the lif together in the mountain nearby a river in Hoengseong County, Gangwon Province. The film captures the sincere and sweet love of humanity and also witnesses the fragility of life when the couple faced the final sad goodbye.

The life and death story touched the heart of the audience and won the Audience Award at the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival when it premiered in 2013. After its release in 2014 in Korean theaters, it became one of the bestselling independent films in Korean history. The film was screened in Korean with English subtitles.
'''A team of young Syrian refugees living in Berlin build up a new app to help newcomers in the city. The initiative highlits the significant contribution that refugees can make by improving the daily lives of people in the communities where they live in and by energetically engaging in all spheres of economic activity.'''

A team of six Syrian refugees have found an innovative way to help other refugeesdeal with one of the main obstacles they face while establishing their “new life” in Berlin: excessive bureaucracy, which forms a true labyrinth of form filling and officialese.

After winning a local software development contest and later drawing praise at the Startup Europe tech conference, the group has been committed to the development of an app for smartphones and computers designed to help immigrants.

Its name is “Bureaucrazy” and it will compose of three basic functions: a translations provider mode which will allow users to enter data in their own language and print out forms in German, a mapping service which guides the newcomers to the right direction and the competent council offices, and a multiple-choice decision tree for frequently asked questions (FAQ) that arise when dealing with the maze of offices and documents asylum seekers encounter.
It is noteworthy that none of the six Syrian developers had any previous coding experience before arriving in Germany. They would not have succeeded without the valuable assistance provided to them by the ReDI School of Digital Integration, an NGO devoted to creating opportunities for young refugees by teaching them computer skills.

In order to achieve their goal of making the app available by the beginning of next year‚ the Bureaucrazy team needs financial support. Therefore, they are planning to launch a campaign to raise money for new equipment and other expenses.

This initiative is significant and as it highlights that the current refugee crisis can become an opportunity, attracting immense talent in Berlin. If we recall, Steve Jobs, an arch innovator from California’s Silicon Valley and the founder of Apple Computer, came to USA from the Syrian city of Homs after his biological father fled from Syria to USA.

'''Falling Walls Lab’s first edition dates back to 2011, when it was set up within the context of the Falling Walls Conference, the gathering takes place on 9th November every year in Berlin and is organized by the homonymous foundation.'''

The meeting involves 20 of the world’s leading scientists from 80 countries who present their own research in 15-minute-talks to an audience of about 700 international spectators, in order to share their latest scientific findings. This is meant to build bridges between people from all around the world bringing different areas of human knowledge together - which are normally not linked: it is no accident that the slogan of the event is “Which are the next walls to fall?”

Well, the Falling Walls Lab’s contest gives the three winners the great opportunity to take part in this event as speakers, besides getting a cash prize to put their ideas into practice. But how does the competition work exactly?

100 finalists will be selected through national contests spread over 50 cities of 30 countries and in different times. Academics or professionals applying must present their idea (a research project or a social initiative) in a 3-minute-speech in English.

Participants in the final round will do the same in Berlin on 8th November in front of a selection board made up of high-level researchers, professors, economic and politics experts.
The good news even for those who won’t be among the winners: each participant will get an A.T. Kearney Scholarship to cover the ticket for the Conference and the accommodation from 8 to 9 November.

'''Elcio Cafaro, world famous Brazilian musician and drummer, will show you his unique and spectacular musical abilities at Global Music Academy Berlin.'''

The Brazilian drummer Elcio Cafaro has some unique techniques, groovy appearance and during his career he joined many big names of the Latin American jet set, including Chico Buarque, Roberta Sá or Cassia Eller, with whom Cafaro recorded his first two albums, from 1990 and 1996.

Cafaro will share with the audience his experience and techniques with different Brazilian instruments. People attending the event will learn different Brazilian rhythms such as Carnival, Samba, Frevo, Maracatu or Forró. In the workshop, he will help to master the art of Bossa Nova, showing the differences between the Brazilian and original jazz.

Cafaro participated with Roberta Sá at an event called “Brazil Selection” in the city of Cologne during the 2006 World Cup. Internationally, he had a European tour with the guitarist Daniel Marques in 2010, and played once more with Roberta Sá at the World Expo in Shanghai on July 2010.

The Brazilian jazz that Elcio Cafaro represents is a music genre largely influenced by bossa nova. This usually reminds of traditional Latin jazz, but, in the contrary to that, it is more “nationalistic” – combining jazz with traditional Brazilian styles. The origin of the Brazilian jazz comes originally from Brazilian (usually bossa nova) musicians who got influenced in the USA during their travels.

The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as professional musicians, teachers or students. It will take place on August 23, 2016 at Global Music Academy Berlin.
