Wolfgang Michael Gunkel, born May 15th 1947 in Berlin is a German politician (SPD).

Political career[edit]

Wolfgang Gunkel is a member of the SPD and currently Chairman of the SPD - Neisse. He leads the working group of Internal Security at the State Board Saxony the SPD.

In 2005, Gunkel was a member of the German Bundestag and since February 2006 Deputy Chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. He is a member of the Bundestag's Committee on Internal Affairs.

Education[edit]

After finishing High School Wolfgang Gunkel joined the police force and was trained as a police sergeant. In 1974 Gunkel was promoted to Police Commissioner. Prior to his function as Executive Director of the Police Directorate Bautzen, Gunkel was from 1997-1999 Vice-Rector of the University for Police Saxony. Since 2005 he is the president of the Police Department within the location of Upper Lusatia-Lower Silesia.
