The Nokia Foundation provides grants and awards in support of scientific developments of information and telecommunications technologies and to promote education of the sector in Finland. In the year 2013 Nokia Foundation awarded EUR 355 000 in Nokia scholarships to 73 applicants. Total of all awarded grants was EUR 449 900. The firm currently has three different scholarships/grants programmes and they are the Nokia Visiting Professor, Nokia Scholarship and Fulbright-Nokia Distinguished Chair. The Grants for the Nokia Visiting Professors are given to foreign professors to work in Finland, or respectively to Finnish meritorious professors to work at a respected foreign university. On the other hand, the Nokia Scholarship is intended to encourage efficient, fast-progressing postgraduate studies. The Nokia Scholarships are given  individuals pursuing a doctoral degree in information or telecommunications technology or in areas supporting the development of these branches of science. Scholarship can be granted for postgraduate studies in a Finnish university or to a Finnish applicant for postgraduate studies in another country. With regards to the Fulbright-Nokia Distinguished Chair in Information and Communications Technologies, this  offers a unique opportunity for an American scholar to be involved  in an  international research collaboration. The Chair position is available for scholars and specialists in Information and Communications Technologies and involves research and lecturing at a higher education institution in Finland.

About Nokia

Nokia employs over 50,000 people in more than 120 countries. The firm has been involved in many sectors over time: including cables, paper products, tires, rubber boots, consumer and industrial electronics, plastics, chemicals, telecommunications infrastructure and so on. Nokia initially entered the telecommunications equipment market in 1960 when with the focus on the production of radio-transmission equipment. 1982 was the year whereby Nokia introduced the first fully-digital local telephone exchange in Europe, as well as the world’s first car phone. However, in 2007, Nokia’s telecoms infrastructure operations was combined with those of Siemens thus introducing a joint venture called Nokia Siemens Networks. In the year 2011, the firm went into collaboration with Microsoft to strengthen its position in the competitive smartphone market. This meant that, Nokia adopted the Windows Phone operating system for smart devices and through their strategic partnership Nokia and Microsoft are in pursuit of establishing an alternative ecosystem to rival iOS and Android.

This global presence to an extent illustrates the diverse cultural background of its employees, clients and consumers. They offer university exchange programmes whereby students in Finland gain the opportunity to study at a university in other parts of the world.

Employment Policy

With regards to their employment policy, Nokia employs over 50,000 people from more than 120 different countries around the world. Within the working environment Nokia values Respect, Challenge, Achievement and Renewal. Due to this, employees are rewarded when they demonstrate these values. The ´People´s Choice Award´ selection is based on colleagues in every four month nominating each other, then the leadership make the final judgement. Nokia ensures the wellbeing of employees as it is one of their priorities via their ‘wellbeing@work’ framework which has been put in place for managers to help ensure their own wellbeing as well as their responsibilities to their teams. This involves group coaching sessions and forums, job rotation, fitness and wellbeing days. Wellbeing programs are tailored to the needs of employees in different countries and implemented locally. A recruitment management system helps Nokia reach the talent they need from a diverse background. The firm has a training and development programme to enhance the skills of its employees- this programme involves 70% Learning on the job, 20% Self study, coaching and mentoring and 10% Structured learning. Nokia implements surveys to gain feedback from employees on how they can improve as an employer. Additionally, the firm values employees from diverse backgrounds, expertise and experiences and aim to improve the gender balance of employees especially within senior management. Nokia´s policies are consistent with international labor laws and standards and sometimes exceed the requirements of labor laws along with regulations in the countries where they operate in. Many of their employees volunteer to support a range of local programs that aim to support the disadvantaged in their local communities.

Education

Nokia contributes to education projects around the world by connecting schools and universities, and supporting online programs focusing on specific issues such as the promotion of safer internet use for young people. They also offer informative webinars on current technologies.

Nokia provides an 18-months International Graduate Trainee Program (IGTP). This traineeship is based in different operational headquarters such as Munich, Espoo, Irving, Gurgaon and Shanghai. Promotion of Human- and Civil Rights

Activities in the Field of Humanitarian Aid

Nokia is committed to the principles of the United Nations Global Compact and has been a signatory and member since the existence of The Global Compact. Additionally, they support many charitable activities, for example, it generated finance for charity by the auctioning of ten Nokia 8800 Sirocco Brian Eno Signature Edition phones. The funds raised were donated to the Keiskamma Aids Treatment program and The World Land Trust. The Keiskamma Aids Treatment program provides both HIV education and antiretroviral drug therapy to residents of the district at the mouth of the Keiskamma River in South Africa. With regards to The World Land Trust, this is an international conservation charity, based in Halesworth, a rural town in Suffolk, UK. It has been working to preserve the world's most biologically important and threatened lands, and has helped purchase and protect over 300,000 acres of habitats rich in wildlife, in areas such as Belize, Costa Rica, the Philippines, South America and the UK.

Supporting Music and Visual Arts

Nokia has partnered with several organisations to allow the promotion of musical artists work. For example, in 2008 Nokia announced that Warner Music Group will allow its diverse catalog of new stars and legendary artists available through Nokia Music Stores around the world as well as through Comes With Music which was a revolutionary way for people to discover and enjoy music offered uniquely by Nokia.

Supporting Film Industry

Nokia has cooperated with the Tribeca Film Festival as well as integrated their advances in mobile imaging into the Festival's activities. The members of the film festival competition created a series of short films using the Nokia 6682 imaging smartphone.

Supporting Sport

Nokia supports sport and sport organisations in many forms, especially by the integration of sports within their devices such as integrating it within their gaming system. For example in the past, Nokia, together with Electronic Arts (EA) announced that FIFA Soccer 2004 will be released for the Nokia N-Gage game deck. Additionally, the soccer season of FIFA Soccer 2004 on the Nokia N-Gage game deck allowed players into an amazing 3D stadium graphics, and provided head-to-head multiplayer gameplay via Bluetooth(TM) wireless technology.
