Melchior Wathelet

Melchior Wathelet was born on September 30th 1977 in Verviers (Belgium). He is a member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for the Walloon Christian Democratic Party (CDH).

Political Career[edit]

Melchior Wathelet started his political career in 2003 as a member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for CDH. In 2004, he became leader of the CDH group in the Belgian Parliament and second Vice-chairman of CDH. He got re-elected in 2007 and became a member of the Government Leterme as State Secretary of Budget and Family Policy. In 2009, there was a Government shuffle and he also became responsible for Asylum and Migration. In Government Di Ripo, in December 2011, he became State Secretary of Environment, Energy, Mobility and State Reform. Wathelet is also active on the local level in Verviers as a councillor and has been since 2007.

Education[edit]

He did his Bachelor’s degree in law at the University of Namen. He acquired a Master’s degree from the University Louvain-la-Neuve, followed by a Master's in European law at the University of Southampton.
