Jerzy Szmit – (born on 8th September 1960 in Olsztyn, Poland) is a Polish politician, journalist, and official of local government, former Speaker of the Warmia-Mazury region, Senatr (VI term) and a Member of Parliament (VII term).

Political Career[edit]

Between 1994 and 1998 he was a councillor for the Olsztyn city council, then he was a member of the council of Warmia and Mazury region until 2002. He worked as General Manager of the Regional Office business in the Olsztyn area. In 1999 he was the first Speaker of the Warmia-Mazury chosen by a coalition of AWS-UW-PSL, which was repealed in the same year in connection with the collapse of the coalition.

He was an international observer during the presidential elections in Ukraine in 2004. In the parliamentary elections in 2005 he was a senator (VI term) in the district of Olsztyn for the Law and Justice (Prawo i Sprawiedliwość). In the Senate, he was chairman of the Local Government and Public Administration. In the 2007 elections he unsuccessfully ran for re-election.

In the 2011 elections he was elected to Parliament as a candidate of the Law and Justice in the district of Olsztyn. He unsuccessfully ran for election to the European Parliament in 2014.

Education[edit]

He graduated from the Faculty of Geodesy at the University of Agriculture and Technology in Olsztyn and the Faculty of Management at Warsaw University.
