About Inditex[edit]

Inditex is a fashion retailer, established in 1963. The retailer started of as a small workshop making women’s clothing. Today, the company has over 6,460 stores throughout the world. The company launched its first Zara store in 1975 and expanded the brand internationally in the 1980s. Subsequently it has launched new retail concepts: Pull & Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, Zara Home and Uterqüe.

Engagement in Cultural Diplomacy[edit]

Inditex takes diversity within their company very important. It ensures that its employees are mixture of men and women of different ages and backgrounds. Multiculturalism is part of Inditex's DNA. The 128,313 employees represent over 150 nationalities and speak 40 different languages. The Group has specific plans developed to date guarantee that environmental considerations are fully integrated into all of their operations. Inditex has three major strategic initiatives: ‘water management, energy and greenhouse gas emissions management and biodiversity protection’ as well as action plans that address specific impacts of Inditex's business.

Employment Policy[edit]

Under Inditex’s ‘Code of Conduct’, employees no one shall be discriminated against because of their race, physical disability, illness, religion, sexual orientation, political views, age, nationality or gender. In addition to this, the company values its employees as a key factor for the business. The company therefore upholds and promotes human and labour rights. Inditex ensures that the regulations and best practices in the field of employment conditions and health and safety at work.

Grants and Scholarships[edit]

Inditex provides scholarships to researchers who are enrolled in doctoral program offered by the UDC (University of La Coruña) and wish to stay at research centres abroad in order to carry out their research. The minimun duration of the stay should be 3 months.

Cooperation with Universities[edit]

Inditex has numerous partnerships with organisations and institutions in order to develop its corporate social responsibility policy. This dialogue and collaborative experience has enabled them to move forward sharing and applying the best sustainability practices. The Group is in partnership with Universidade de Santiago de Compostela and Universidade da Coruña, both Universities provide support to Inditex through their expertise.


Notable Activities[edit]

Promoting Human- and Civil Rights[edit]

Inditex is highly committed to equality and non-discrimination. The company ratified the EQUAL Diversidad Activa (Active Diversity) project in 2006. It equally signed a Framework Agreement with the union federation UNI GLOBAL UNION Inditex's human resources management. The agreement enshrines that Inditex is committed to uphold its workers labour rights.

Activities in the Field of Humanitarian Aid[edit]

In September 2009, Inditex and the Entreculturas Foundation signed two collaboration agreements for the financing of the aid programs being carried out in Africa and Latin America. Inditex provides a total of €9.8 million to fund these projects, which will last three years and will focus on enhancing the skills and employment prospects of vulnerable echelons of society. Inditex’s previous contribution benefitted over 750,000 people. The agreements that have been signed by the two parties encompassed a total of 20 initiatives under the umbrella of the Foundation's "Educate people, generate opportunities" program, 16 of which form part of the Latin America Program and four of which under the Africa Program. These initiatives will directly benefit 120,000 people.

Supporting Music and Visual Arts[edit]

Inditex promotes cultural events and organisations activities. The company is in collaboration with the Galicia Symphony Orchestra, the Association of the Friends of Opera of A Coruña, the Reina Sofia Association of Friends of Art and the Royal Toledo Foundation. In regards to sports, Inditex is supporting the work of promoting grass-roots sport.
