About Fresnillo plc

Fresnillo plc is a Mexican-based precious metals mining company incorporated in the United Kingdom and headquartered in Mexico City. Fresnillo is the world's largest producer of silver from ore (primary silver) and Mexico's second-largest gold miner. Fresnillo plc was established in 2008, following restructuring of Peñoles separating precious metals business into Fresnillo Group. In the same year, the company made its debut on the London Stock Exchange. Fresnillo has six operating mines, two in development and four in exploration.

Engagement in Cultural Diplomacy

Mining and processing precious metals are essential along with social acceptability and environmental challenges that must be effectively addressed. Finding solutions to these challenges requires exceptional commitment, operational excellence and innovation. Therefore, the responsible operation of the business is to create value for and ensure the well-being of stakeholders without compromising future generations. They achieve this through responsible policies and practices implemented from the earliest stages of exploration until mine closure. Fresnillo relies on their own executives and staff for oversight, training and implementation of policies and programmes, and works closely with employees, contractors, unions, communities, governmental agencies, industry organisations, NGOs and other third parties to ensure that their performance adheres to the standards, needs and aspirations of their stakeholders. Risks include security; potential actions by government; public perception against mining; safety; environmental incidents and human resources.

Employment Policy

Fresnillo plc’s Centre for Technical Studies (CETEF) was created to train a high quality mining technicians for its specific needs. Candidates that join the CETEF are chosen from the communities surrounding the company’s operations in order to favour local employment while securing the talent pipeline. The training approach is based on a model that favours hands on experience, spending 20% studying theory and 80% practicing with modern equipment. Furthermore, Fresnillo also has an agreement with Peñoles to send the candidates to the Centre for Technical Studies of Laguna del Rey (CETLAR). The CETLAR follows a similar logic to the CETEF but focuses on training maintenance technicians. Furthermore, Fresnillo engages in the increasing the participation of women in mining. This is believed to be fundamental to secure the talent pipeline. Although the company is slightly above the national average, they must maintain the effort to seize this opportunity.
