Francesco Maria Amoruso was born in Bisceglie on August 1, 1956, where he still resides today. He was elected for the first time in 2008 with the Party Il Popolo della Libertà for the region Puglia.

Biography[edit]

He comes from a prominent business family. He is married and has two children. He holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Bari. His thesis was titled "La setta carbonara in terra di Bari nei moti del 1820-21" (The carbonara sect in Bari during the riots of 1820-21). He was the director of several companies, including Finpuglia Spa. He was a member of the Catholic Scouts and is still actively engaged in volunteering. Alongside Giuseppe Tatarella, his political master, Amoruso has contributed to the process of modernization of the right, by engaging in the revival of important information tools such as the newspaper "Roma" and the broadcaster "Telebari".

Political career[edit]

Amoruso was elected to the Italian Parliament in 1994 as Member of the district of Bisceglie-Molfetta. He is a member of the Parliamentary Group of Alleanza Nazionale, in the XII legislature he has been part of the 3° Foreign Affairs Committee and the Committee on Elections. He has held the position of President of the Standing Committee of Italians Abroad. He was re-elected for the 13° legislature in May 1996, also in the district of Bisceglie-Molfetta. He was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and for the Italian Parliamentary Delegation to the Council of Europe and the Assembly of Western European Union. He was elected for the third time as Deputy of Bisceglie-Molfetta in 2001 and currently holds the position of President of the Parliamentary control over the management bodies of compulsory forms of welfare and social assistance. He is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Parliamentary Committee for monitoring the implementation of the Schengen Treaty, Europol Oversight and control and supervision in the field of immigration. In 2011 he was involved in the so-called scandal "affittopoli". On November 16 2013, with the suspension of the Party Il Popolo della libertà, he joined Forza Italia.
