Notable Activities[edit]

Activities in the Field of Humanitarian Aid[edit]

One of the fundamental beliefs of Fiat S.p.A. is the moral responsibility to contribute positively to the local communities and the greater community as well. This belief is deeply entrenched in the corporate culture and influences the company's acts and decisions. By engaging with the employees not only in the workplace but also in the community, the company builds a more secure future for the enterprise and for society as a whole.

In 2013, the Group spent the resources of approximately 19.7 millions euros for the well-being of the local communities. The support for the local communities is delivered on the global level, however, the most benefiting countries are in Europe (47.3%), North America (29.2%) and Latin America (23.3%). One of the main ideologies of the Group is that, they try to invest in specific programmes with the aim of enhancing the community development (50.7% of total value of the community initiatives) rather than simply donating money (47.4%). Of the total investment in the local communities, Fiat spends 77.7% of the resources on cash contributions, 17.8% on volunteer work, 3.3% on donations in kind and 1.2% on management costs worldwide.

The main initiatives in the local societies are: Supporting social inclusion, cultural growth and economic development in local communities as well as giving the employees a chance to do volunteer work during paid working hours. The group also sets the targets, which should be achieved by 2020.

In terms of Social inclusion, cultural growth and economic development in local communities, approximately 2.5 million euros was invested in the programme Árvore da Vida and it reached the target group of 20 000 idividuals (initiative in the field of religion in Brasil) program from 2004 to 2013. At the same time, 670 Brazilian students had a chance to benefit from the same project Árvore de Vida Capacitação Profissional from 2006 to 2013. In the same field, employees in the US and Canada gave approximately 4.3 million euros for the donation of “United Way” in 2013, an initiative dedicated to improving the lives of the communities in 41 countries and territories. Fiat S.p.A. also supports volunteer work during paid working hours. Formare project and Natal Solidário were the main initiatives in Brazil, in which Magneti Mirelli and Teksid employees could do the volunteer work for non profits during the working hours.

Additionally, in 2014 Magentti Mirelli Brazil celebrates a decade of Formare, the project, which develops the potentiality of young people from low-income backgrounds to integrate into society as citizens and professionals. In the same field, Chrysler group US employees dedicated more than 9 400 work hours for the support of various company sponsored volunteer efforts in 2013. Additionally, around 135 000 hours yearly are dedicated by the Group for blood donations worldwide.

Throughout Fiat history, the company has assisted victims of natural disasters by rapidly responding to the needs of the community and supplying technical, humanitarian and financial aid as well as support vehicles.

According to the Fiat Community Investment Guidelines, every initiative is managed at the plant, company and brand level, while financially more demanding initiatives have to be approved and supervised at the corporate level. At the same time, the Group developed the indicators to measure the impact of the initiatives in order to be able to evaluate the benefit for the local community. This measure serves as an ensuring tool which investigates whether the activities were being aligned and relevant to the current needs of the regions involved.

Promoting Human and Civil Rights[edit]

In 2012, common Sustainability Guidelines were adopted across the Group. This includes a broad section in “Human Rights and Working Conditions”, in which 4 specific subjects are treated. These are: rejection of the use of forced or child labour in any form, recognition of the right to freedom of association in accordance with applicable laws, safeguarding of employee health and safety and a guarantee of equal opportunities; fair working conditions and appropriate working time, equal compensation, and the right to training for employees. The document is available in ten languages, e.g. Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, Polish, Dutch, Portuguese, Chinese and Japanese.

The commitment with Human Rights is reflected in the company through the creation of courses for its support. All professionals worldwide within the Group were involved in a course on non-discrimination, designed to address discrimination in the workplace (ILO convention 111) and to promote a business culture where all employees feel respected and valued.

In terms of Human Rights, the Group also refers to all the relevant international conventions as United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the principal Conventions of the International Labour Organisation as already mentioned, the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).

The annual survey in 2013 showed, that there are no incidents of child labour or forced and compulsory labor took place in any of the companies mapped (companies covered more than 99% of the employees worldwide), including those located in countries that are not participants in the ILO conventions on these issues. According to the survey, no Group company employs individuals under the minimum working age, which is set by the local legislation, nor apprentices under the statutory minimum age, nor minors under 15 years old in the nations, where the minimum age is lower.

Investing into the Cultural Exchange Programs[edit]

The company is involved in programs to promote cultural exchange. By sensitizing employees to the concept of multiculturalism and its implications in the workplace, in 2012 the group created a training program focused on the development of specific cross-cultural collaboration skills. For example, those responsible for the Human Resources and Quality professional employees participated in a series of cross-cultural courses divided into three phases: assessment, cross-cultural coaching and team building.
Additionally the company offers the most talented employees, professional opportunities that allow them to gain experience in other geographic or business areas as well as opportunities for greater contact with senior management.
