Engagement in Cultural Diplomacy

Being aware of the importance of corporate culture and diversity of cultures, Deutsche Telekom launched various international programs to support cultural exchange. They are one of the biggest promoter and sponsors of sport and music in Germany and worldwide. Deutsche Telekom’s rich variety of sponsoring commitments also engages with social responsibility.

Employment Policy

Deutsche Telekom has over 230,000 employees around the world. Within the company, both employee individuality as well as diversity are guaranteed. The approach for this diversity is based on six factors, namely age, gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion and skills. Deutsche Telekom fights for equal opportunities and is dedicated to bringing more women into management positions. In addition they try to foster international cooperation and to deal with the changing demographic landscape.

Education

International Internship Programs

Deutsche Telekom has programs that are specifically designed for students, graduates and postgraduates. Since Deutsche Telekom operates on a global basis, the Group offers a diverse selection of internship possibilities. They have over 9100 trainees and students on study programs in Germany alone and offer traineeships to international graduates from all over the globe. The Group offers, among other things, intensive international multiple-month training programs (for instance with Magyar Telekom, with T-Systems South Africa, etc.), which then lead to career opportunities worldwide. Deutsche Telekom recently initiated the “International Youth Exchange Program” for the children of German employees. They have the opportunity to spend six weeks with an employee’s family in USA, Spain or Hungary. In return their children live with the German families. Deutsche Telekom has developed multiple international programs and initiatives in the area of cultural origin. An example is “Afrika kommt”, which is an advanced training initiative that offers African specialists and managers the opportunity to gain valuable experience at major German companies. In addition, the ‚International Round Table’ has been brought into being for international employees in Germany. It aims at fostering intercultural dialogue and to encourage an international working climate. Deutsche Telekom furthermore aims to increase the share of international employees in development programs. They initiated the exchange program ‘Telekom X-change’ and the program „Meine Chance – ich starte durch!“ as an entry qualification for deprived young people.

Grants and Scholarships

Since 2004, the Deutsche Telekom Stiftung has awarded different scholarships and grants to young, talented scientists and performance-orientated doctoral candidates. In 2014, Future teachers could apply for the scholarship FundaMINT. The company annually provides 12 two-year scholarships to highly qualified young scientists in the subjects of mathematics, informatics, physics, integrated science and technology. The Deutsche Telekom Foundation also awards scholarships and grants to young people with immigrant backgrounds. They furthermore support the Telekom@School project by offering free Internet access to 34,000 students throughout Germany so that they have access to the Internet and therefore to information and education.

Supporting Sport

The Deutsche Telekom Group supports a vast range of athletes, clubs, associations and events in Germany. Due to the extreme popularity of soccer in Germany, their primary focus is on this sport and they have established high profile partnerships. Deutsche Telekom is partner of the German women’s, men’s and youth national teams, as well as the main sponsor of champion FC Bayern Munich and of many other national football teams. They are furthermore involved in sales and content collaborations with other teams from the German National Soccer League and organizes the Telekom Cup, “a pre-season tournament in which top German teams compete for the first silverware of the season, giving fans the chance to watch new signings for the first time and see how their club is shaping up for the coming campaign” (Deutsche Telekom 2014). In supporting youth sports, school sports projects and athletes with disabilities through multiple partnerships, Deutsche Telekom focuses on the social aspects of sport. The Group has established partnerships with the German Olympic Association (DOSB) and the German Disability Sports Association (DBS). In addition, they sponsor the Telekom Baskets Bonn and the Bonn marathon.

Supporting Music and Visual Arts

As an international communications company, the Deutsche Telekom Group aims to use its products, services and innovative technology to provide more access to music. The company cooperates with partners from the national and international music scene, bringing fans more music through more channels. In addition, musical events such as the “Telekom Street Gigs” have brought an eclectic range of live music experiences to an audience of around 40,000 music lovers. The “Electronic Beats” website has furthermore established an international music community that supports live events. As the main sponsor of the Beethovenfest in Bonn and the “International Telekom Beethoven Competition Bonn”, Deutsche Telekom also promotes classical music. In 2010, Deutsche Telekom initiated a respected corporate art collection called Art Collection Telekom (ACT). The main focus of the collection rests on contemporary work by artists from Eastern and South Eastern Europe as well as Turkey, and attempts to respond to social and political changes after the fall of the Iron Curtain. In doing so, it promotes a wider understanding of Europe's cultural diversity through the visual arts. The aim is to represent a concentrated spectrum of contemporary art from this cultural sphere. Various artworks from the Art Collection Telekom have been on display at international exhibitions. With this initiative, Deutsche Telekom is helping and supporting young artists to continue their work. T-Mobile Polska – Deutsche Telekom’s presence in Poland – is one of the best-known sponsors of major cultural, sports, educational, and charity initiatives worldwide. An example of one of these important projects are the “T-Mobile New Horizons” film festival, the sponsorship of top-class “T-Mobile Ekstraklasa” football matches, and the “Pomoc Mierzona Kilometrami” CR project. The company has even received numerous awards and prizes for their sponsorship activities.

Activities in the Field of Humanitarian Aid

Deutsche Telekom furthermore supports aid organizations free of charge and in an unbureaucratic way, since natural disasters and personal tragedies require fast, direct help. The aid the company provides ranges from immediate aid and reconstruction assistance after disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes and hurricanes, to bone marrow donations and telephone hotlines. Deutsche Telekom has furthermore matched the sum that their employees have donated to the victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake for immediate aid and reconstruction. In addition, after the recent catastrophe in Japan, the Deutsche Telekom Group arranged for its customers and aid organizations in Germany to communicate with Japan for free. By organizing its activities in line with the [1] Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, Deutsche Telekom is committed to respect, promote and implement Human Rights. This respect for human rights is embedded in the company’s Code of Conduct. Deutsche Telekom will furthermore keep contributing and taking steps in order to ensure worldwide promotion of human rights. The Group recently launched a project in developing a mobile application to improve healthcare for pregnant women in Kenya.
