The First Female Cartoonist in Pakistan and the Muslim World Exhibits in Berlin

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Berlin, held an event, a Cartoon Exhibition by a renowned Pakistani Cartoonist, Ms Nigar Nazar, which was titled “The funny side of life with Gogi” and was held on the 15th of January 2016 at the Embassy. Nigar Nazar has the honour of being the first female cartoonist in Pakistan and the muslim world. The exhibition was attended by a number of guests, both from Germany and the expatriate community.

Nigar Nazar was born in 1953, her character Gogi is an urban Pakistani woman, struggling with her frailties in the context of sexist-social norms. Nazar changed her degree from medical to fine arts in 1971. Her cartoon Gogi appeared for the first time in Karachi's Institute of Arts and Crafts annual magazine. Nazar was awarded with a Bachelor in fine arts from the University of Punjab, Nazar attended courses at the Australian National University in Canberra as well. Currently she is the chief executive officer of Gogi Studios and was a Fulbright Professor at the art department of the University of Oregon, between 2002 and 2003.

Gogi Studios works on projects that actively address social issues. Nazar completed 5 “awareness comics” in 2009. Three books have been published, as well as several calendars, brochures, diaries and posters. Moreover, 12 public transport buses were wrapped with Gogi cartoons in 2004, in order to convey social messages, in collaboration with non-governmental organisations. She also wrote several books for children on the topic of health and hygiene, the environment, disaster management and first aid and safety all of which were published and distributed by the government of Pakistan.
