Last Sunday, April 10th, Bryan Adams announced on his official Facebook page saying that he was cancelling his Thursday performance in Biloxi, Mississippi, in protest over the state's new law that allows people to refuse service to gay couples.

The Mississippi law, know as HB1513, was signed on the 5th April, from the Governor Phil Bryant, and will take effect on the 1st of July. Its supporters' argument is that it is a form to protect the Christian views on traditional marriage and gender roles. In Bryan Adams' opinion, it is an unbelievable form of discrimination and a denial of human and civil rights, for the LGBT citizens.

The official statement said: “Mississippi has passed anti-LGBT ‘Religious Liberty’ bill 1523. I find it incomprehensible that LGBT citizens are being discriminated against in the state of Mississippi. I cannot in good conscience perform in a State where certain people are being denied their civil rights due to their sexual orientation. Therefore, I’m cancelling my 14 April show at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Using my voice I stand in solidarity with all my LGBT friends to repeal this extremely discriminatory bill. Hopefully Mississippi will right itself and I can come back and perform for all of my many fans. I look forward to that day. - Bryan Adams ‪#‎stop1523”.

Adams is not the first singer to take such a position. Just last Friday, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band pulled out a Sunday show in Greensboro, North Carolina, in a protest over a similar law. Springsteen said “There are more important things than a rock show and this fight against prejudice and bigotry – which is happening as I write – is one of them”. It was also declared “It is the strongest means I have for raising my voice in opposition to those who continue to push us backwards instead of forwards”.

Mississippi is one of about 10 states considering such measures after the US supreme court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, last summer. Meanwhile, several civil protests are happening in Mississippi, with the support of writers and luminaries like John Grisham and Donna Tartt, to urge state officials to repeal the law.
