Alfredo Palacio assumed the presidency of the Republic of Ecuador on April 20, 2005, after serving as Vice President for more than two years. Since then, Dr. Palacio has led efforts to launch the social, economic and political transformation of the Republic. In the field of health he started the reform and universal coverage for all Ecuadorians with participation of stakeholders in the sector.

Luis Alfredo Palacio González was born January 22nd, 1939. From January 15, 2003 to April 20, 2005, he served as vice president. He served as a President of Ecuador from 2005 to 2007 after President Lucio Gutiérrez which was removed from the Ecuadorian Congress.

Political Career[edit]

Alfredo Palacio is a practicing cardiologist. He is the founder of INCAP (National Institute of Cardiology Alfredo Palacio). He has published several scientific works in the fields of science, culture and politics. Alfredo Palacio became President of the Republic of Ecuador in 2005. He was previously vice-president of the Republic of Ecuador from 2003 to 2005. His other functions included being Regional Director of the Social Security Institute of Ecuador, IESS in 1994, and Minister of Health from 1994 to 1996. From 1988 and 1992, Alfredo Palacio was vice president of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT). He was also Director of the National Institute of Cardiology 'Alfredo Palacio', INCAP from 1984 to 2003. He worked as professor of Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Public Health at the University of Guayaquil between 1975 and 1988.


Education[edit]

Alfredo Palacio received a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Guayaquil, specialising in cardiology. He participated in specialised courses in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and is a fellow of Cardiology at Barnes Hospital of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

He has received awards from the House of Ecuadorian Culture, Ecuadorian Medical Federation, American Medical Association, Ministry of National Defence, Ecuador’s Civil Defence, Ecuador’s National Government, as well as the municipalities of Guayaquil, Quito and others.
